The Best Haircuts for Different Face Shapes
Have you ever seen a picture of a celebrity online and fallen in love with their haircut? But when you get the same style recreated in the salon, it doesn’t have quite the same vibe. It’s probably because you have a different face shape, so what works on someone else might not work the same on you. In this post, our hair stylists here in Malvern will show you which haircuts look best for different face shapes.
Determining Your Face Shape
If you’re not quite sure what your face shape is, it’s easy to check. Pull your hair back and snap a photo on your phone. Then take a pen tool and trace an outline around your face. The shape you’re left with will fall into one of the following categories:
- Oval face
- Square face
- Round face
- Heart-shaped face
Best hairstyles for oval face shape
When the length of your face is longer than the width, and your jawline is slightly narrower than your hairline, you have an oval face. You don’t have prominent points or angles, and your features are gently rounded.
You want to avoid elongating your face with this shape, so shorter styles such as a blunt bob with face-framing pieces can work beautifully.
If you want something longer, try a shoulder-length style with subtle layers to volumise the hair.
Best hairstyles for heart-shaped faces
A heart-shaped face is wider at the hairline, but the jaw is more defined with a narrow chin (almost pointed like the base of a heart). You’ve probably got killer cheekbones and your forehead is a prominent facial feature.
If you want to accentuate your heart-shaped face, a high top knot or slicked-back ponytail is all you need.
To balance out the shape a little more, the lob is a great option. This adds wideness to your jaw. For something longer, a deep side-part and loose waves is another great choice.
Best hairstyles for square faces
If your forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are all around the same width, you have a square face. A strong jawline is the prominent feature and looks beautiful (think Gwyneth Paltrow and Olivia Wilde).
To accentuate the jawline, blunt bangs or a short bob will look fantastic and show off your features. To take away from the jawline, wispy curtain bangs are a softer option and draw the eye down with the use of subtle layers.
Best hairstyles for round faces
If your forehead is the same width as your jawline but you don’t have any prominent angles or corners, you have a round face. These often make you look younger and give you a youthful appearance.
Both short and long styles work well on round faces, but we seriously love a pixie cut with volume to accentuate those rounded features. Think about lots of texture and layers if you want to stick with a long cut.
